A museum in Nový Knín covering the history of gold mining and the region around this former royal mining town.
Nový Knín lies on the gold-bearing Kocába river, about 27 km from Orlov. This former royal mining town presents its history in the Gold Museum, a branch of the Příbram Mining Museum that also serves as a tourist information centre.
The exhibition shows how gold was mined and processed in the Nový Knín area from the earliest times to the 20th century. You will see mining tools, carbide lamps, a model of a mine gallery and the town seal. Other sections cover the history of Nový Knín, local crafts and the world gold panning championships.
The museum is housed in a building on the square known as the Mint (Mincovna). It is a Renaissance house with a Gothic core, later remodelled in the Baroque style, and its Empire façade dates from 1801. From 1561 it was the seat of the town's mining office. In the 15th century gold mined in the area was processed here in Nový Knín and then taken to the mints in Prague and Kutná Hora.
Nature trails with geology and mining themes lead around Nový Knín, following traces of mining that are still visible today. You can combine them with a museum visit for a full day out. Parking by the museum is free. Current opening hours and admission prices are on the museum's website.
