A chateau in a romantic setting on a rock above the Orlík reservoir, best combined with a trip along the water.
Orlík Chateau stands on a rocky spur above the Vltava, about 25 km south-east of Orlov as the crow flies. It once towered high above a deep river valley; since the Orlík reservoir was filled in the early 1960s, it has stood just a few metres above the water.
The tour takes about an hour and covers two floors of the chateau. You will see the orders and decorations of Field Marshal Karl Philipp Schwarzenberg, Empire-style rooms with furniture from Paris, the neo-Gothic Knights' Hall, the Teska Hall with its carved ceiling, the armoury and a library of almost 18,000 volumes. The corridors hold a collection of hunting guns and nearly two thousand trophies. Weather permitting, you can also climb the tower. The chateau is surrounded by a large English-style park with the Schwarzenberg family tomb.
The castle was probably founded in the 13th century by King Přemysl Otakar II as a guard post where tolls were collected on river traffic along the Vltava. In 1717 Orlík passed to the Schwarzenbergs. After a fire in 1802 a third floor was added, and in 1849–1860 the chateau was given the neo-Gothic appearance it has today. The state took it over after 1948, and it was returned to the Schwarzenbergs in 1992.
Pleasure boats run from the chateau to Zvíkov Castle and to the dam, and there are also short sightseeing cruises. The car park is about 500 metres from the chateau. Dogs are only allowed inside in a closed carrier. Current opening hours and admission prices are on the chateau website.
