A historic chateau complex in a small town below the Brdy hills, gradually being restored; check in advance whether it is open.
The chateau stands in Rožmitál pod Třemšínem, about 12 km south-west of Orlov as the crow flies. It is privately owned and opens to the public only occasionally, so check before you go whether it will be open.
The chateau is looked after by the Rožmitálský zámek association, which together with volunteers has been gradually repairing it and opening it to visitors since 2019. On open days guides take visitors through the interiors and up the tower. Concerts, festivals, theatre and exhibitions take place in the courtyard. Do not expect a polished state monument; this is a place where you can see a chateau being rescued step by step.
A castle was founded here in the 13th century by Oldřich of the Buzic family, the first to call himself “of Rožmitál”. In 1559–1564 Florián Gryspek rebuilt it in the Renaissance style. From 1623 it belonged to the archbishops of Prague, who used it as a summer residence. After 1948 it was used as flats and gradually fell into disrepair. In 2023 it was a filming location for the film Nosferatu.
The chateau is usually open mainly in summer and during cultural events. Check the chateau website for current opening and admission.
