Točník and Žebrák castles

A pair of King Wenceslas IV's castles a short walk apart, a good combination for a day trip north of Orlov.

Trip at a glance

Suitable for
children, pushchairs, bikes

The castles of Točník and Žebrák stand above the town of Žebrák, about 23 km north of Orlov as the crow flies. They are close to each other, so you can easily visit both in one trip. They suit families with children as well as anyone who enjoys castle ruins.

What you will see

Točník is a large castle on the higher hill with two partly preserved palaces, the Royal Palace and the Burgrave's Palace. You can explore it on your own with a printed guide, and guided tours are also available in summer. Children will enjoy the bear enclosure in the castle moat and the nature trail. Žebrák is the older ruin, lower down the slope. Its main round tower now serves as a viewpoint over the surrounding countryside.

A bit of history

Žebrák was founded in the second half of the 13th century by Oldřich Zajíc of Valdek. King Wenceslas IV grew fond of it and had it rebuilt as a comfortable residence. After Žebrák burnt down in 1395, the king had the new castle of Točník built nearby and was already staying there in 1398. Žebrák fell into ruin after another fire in the 16th century, and Točník was abandoned in the 17th century.

Good to know

The car park is in the village of Točník, about a kilometre on foot from both castles. Each castle has its own admission. Refreshments at Točník are only available in season, and there are two pubs in the village. Current opening hours and admission prices are on the castle website.
